You're missing the point. We are talking about want vs. need here. Don't take it personallypurple5ive wrote:Sinsemilla wrote:Spot on Alex.mazman wrote:He's not disagreeing with your second point about cheap vs expensive but pointing out a large part of the difference between the combos is from the rod. There are differences in reels but if on a tight budget those little advantages you get for putting an extra hundred or two into the reel aren't as big as the difference in putting an extra hundred or two in the rod. I wouldn't go as far as a battler/sienna combo but an atomic arrow matched up with a nasci would imo be a much better combo than a catana matched to a stradic even though both will set you back about the same amount of money.purple5ive wrote:I agree to a certain extent..
But the sienna will never have the same smooth drag that the luvias has, will never have micro drag adjustment, will never have the same retrieve ratio and will never have the same balance..
Big difference for me… might not be the case for others.. hence why this whole who needs expensive gear argument comes into play.
was just on the squid this weekend, and i can tell you straight away a proper squid combo sh*ts all over a elcheapo sienna/sonic combo. they both caught the squid though. but chalk and cheese to use even my rookie cousin had his eyes peeled open with the difference in the way Both outfits fish.
This doesnt apply to small squid though..
Steve I understand about micro drag adjustments and really smooth drag etc. I also like nice gear but its more of a luxury than a necessity i think.
You can catch big squid with a hand line perfectly fine.. and if you want to use topnotch specialist squid gear thats perfectly fine too.
Cheers, Anth
why not just ******* use a hand line on everything then ffs???
why bother with even a shitty rod or reel cause it really is not necessary by the looks of it.
and while were at it, why bother with a boat?? can catch them landbased and people have been for decades..

Re: Rod or reel?
Nah nothing personal.
and i didnt miss the point.
you dont need a rod and reel to catch fish... but we use it anyway because its available to be used
whether you now buy a $100 combo or a $500 combo now thats a personal choice for a variety of reasons, not just because it looks good, sounds good, or is technique specific or because its expensive.
Horses for causes!!!

Re: Rod or reel?
Depends on what your fishing for, but as a general rule I spend about the same amount on the rod as I do on the reel I'm matching it with (so I guess I rate them equally). I prefer shopping for reels because they are fun to play with in the shop.... and I only buy when things are discounted (full retail is for chumps)

Re: Rod or reel?
The guys at my local BCF go running when they see me coming, I'm the guy that waves all the rods in the air checking out the action, whilst in the process of checking the action all the other rods in the overhead racks getting tangled and falling down ! ... they love me :rofl:Mattblack wrote:Depends on what your fishing for, but as a general rule I spend about the same amount on the rod as I do on the reel I'm matching it with (so I guess I rate them equally). Re: Rod or reel?
Definitely not the graphite ones! I've bought a couple cheapish graphite shimano rods in the past from bcf and they both snapped under light pressure. I put it down to 1. Being shimano.. and 2. They have been knocked around a bit instore giving them weak spots.hornet wrote:Hey the glass rods will be ok dunno about the graphite ones ! :rofl:Sinsemilla wrote:And this is why I never buy rods from bcf anaconda etc!hornet wrote:The guys at my local BCF go running when they see me coming, I'm the guy that waves all the rods in the air checking out the action, whilst in the process of checking the action all the other rods in the overhead racks getting tangled and falling down ! ... they love me :rofl:Mattblack wrote:Depends on what your fishing for, but as a general rule I spend about the same amount on the rod as I do on the reel I'm matching it with (so I guess I rate them equally). Re: Rod or reel?
When ever you push your gear everything counts.
But generally it is mostly about the rod.
If catching a bream or a barrel the rod is the what you feel the fish bite, hook the fish and if you get on to a good one the rod is the leaver you use to work the fish.
