Magic Mulloway Moment
Hey Guys,
With the weather ruling out my normal fishing options I thought it would be a good opportunity for another crack at a mulloway.
Headed to the yarra and tried to catch some livies but wasn't having much joy so I went with my backup option of fresh calamari.
Had the rods in the water around 430 and was just sitting back relaxing when about 15mins later a guy on a bike pulled up and asked what I was fishing for.
We were chatting about mulloway when I said to him , that rod there has just had a tap, bait was a whole cala head.
Next thing the drag is screaming I grab the rod set the hook and its battle on.
I didn't want to get my hopes up as it could always be a ray but this fish was giving me every indication it was a big jewy.
After some screaming runs i finally got a look at a big silver flash then a big tail splash and now my heart is absolutely racing because I know this is a fish of some serious size and I just don't want to make a mistake at this critical moment.
The fish has one last big dive and makes his play for the pylons and thankfully I was using my 13ft Prevail and i was able to guide him away from the structure back into open water and down to the ledge where I could land him.
I was finally able to grab him up get a few quick pictures and quick measure and then release him on his way.
Much to my horror after swimming him for awhile and he gave me some nice kicks to say he was ready to go I saw him resurface and he was struggling to get his bearings and go back down so at this point I have no other option than to strip off and jump in the yarra and make sure he swims away safely which he did after i was able to tail grab him and swim him a bit more he really shot off this time and made me feel much better.
Was a quick measure on a borrowed mat that peaked out at 120cm fish was just over so around the 122 to 123cm mark and I'm guessing he was really getting close to that 20kg mark, some more experienced mulloway fisherman will be able to probably give a better indication of weight but either way it was a true beast and a moment ill never forget.
Edit to add table I used for weight estimate was only reference to cms I could find.

Linc- "slimeys are great fun to catch, like hooking a giant vibrator with a propeller onto the end of your rod! Well done"
