i have never used either an extension tube or a rverese ring adptor so i cant give a honest answer, but the ring flash should make thos macro shots perfect.
also bump up the iso a bit and use a faster shutter speed to eliminate blur if hand holding.

are you using your 50mm for these pics or the stock lense.

I will put up a tutorial for everyone interested in cheap macro photography as it is fun and it just costs you around $20 to $50 max instead of $900.

Without a tripod or gorilla pod it is almost impossible to take hand held shots with extension tubes or reverse ring due to the magnification factor and the more rings you put the more stops you loose and the dof is razor thin to work with. It is something you would have to experience to understand what I am trying to say.

I reckon the ring flash will allow me to use faster shutter speeds like you said so will be getting it definitely. I am using D80 which is very bad with iso above 400 lol. Yeah its the 50mm.

with the flash you shoukd be right.. so maybe you can still use F8.
can see the background blur on the flowers that good, but on the spider the back legs are blurred which would have looked better if they had been in focus for a macro...
experimenting is the only way as usual..
def get the ring flash and if you dont have one a remote release. cheap as chips on flebay

F/8 would only enable me to get the spiders eye in focus lol. I used F/22 so you can image how shallow the dof can be. The only way to get everything in focus is by focus stacking. I am doing a bit of jewellery with the focusing rail with varying results but getting there. I connect it with my laptop indoors and outdoor I have a remote release. Is there any cheaper knockoff of Joby Gorilla pod?

We have to catch up so I could get some tips and tricks using speedlites.

hmm Thats bad then, F22 is th most you can go i think lol
i have my old tripod if you want it, its not the best and its a bit flimsy (its an old slick brand), i had to upgarde since my camera is heavy due to extra battery pack etc.........

should meet soon, you get the car sorted out yet???
for speedlites, if you want nikons CLS to work you need a nikon speedlight ($$$). otherwise anything that can do iTTL should suffice.

Couple I took a while ago at Queenscliff, using my fruit based phone, also play a good bit with a DSLR. My favorite subject seems to be documenting my boys and the places we take them...
