Maybe now and then , but on average the bays are usually a lot warmer; a lot of the time compared Bass Straight.frozenpod wrote:Not sure about PPB but we have caught a white shark in Corner Inlet.
PS Rick the water temp in Bass Strait is currently higher than the bays.
I used to get into the shark fishing years ago in PPB , used buckets of blood and guts before all the rules out nowerdays .
If your just going for a swim , your pretty safe imo, although a surfboard looks like a fish to a shark !.
If you burlied up a bucket of blood & guts (illegal nowerdays) 20+ years ago in WPB or PPB, huge sharks of all kinds would swarm in no time , so they are there, but need to be burlied really to get the 'Huge Big bad ass' sharks out there.
On average these days though , even without burley , way more sharks ( of the smaller variety ) in WPB than PPB. Lucky to NOT catch a shark of some sort when fishing WPB these days I recon'.
Cheers , Rick.

Re: Great white sharks in PPB.
I've seen reports and footage of whites in WPB and I've hooked up to a Mako in WPB too. Lots of seven gills, bronzies, schoolies and gummies in there.
My mechanic who fishes out from Seaford says there is a resident white that is not far out, that he has seen a few times at night on different occasions while fishing for whiting. It just cruises up and checks out the boat and swims off.
Near Davies Bay I used to target a large shark that would swim past us landbased at around midnight, every night we were there. Hooked up to it manly times but it would always break me off on the reef/rocks.

Great whites will usually come in to the bay when there are a large number of arrow squid and barracuda in the bay along with makos a swell so they are fairly uncommon but do show up from time to time

Seal Rocks is actually at the western entrance of Westernport. You know when something big is lurking down there when the livies stop getting harassed by the seals. Theres also more Bronzies than you can poke a stick at in Westernport. Heard and seen reputable reports of whites and Makos as far up Wp as Tooradin channel.FishSamFish wrote:why not WP? I thought there was mainly gummys there, with occasional bronzies?ducky wrote:No point living in fear mate.ren't going to be eaten going for a swim. Having said that I don't swim in western port. Haha
I thought that with seal rocks in PPB, they are in there. (I have heard of bronzies+threshers+makos coming up to frankston)
There's big sharks in both bays all year round. There's millions of people in and on the water each year and bugger all attacks of any kind.
I hear there's no sharks in freshwater lakes...
