Nope. Politicians are, for the most part, out of touch. The rest of us -- whether we're primary school teachers or plumbers or surgeons or dressmakers or cooks or deckhands, 'Australians' or refugees or whatever -- need to pay for our breakfast, beer, and childcare. If we want to go to the football, a friend's wedding, or a family trip we've got to pay for it. The politicians -- especially those from major parties -- live in a different world. Those from minor parties are usually just as guilty of game-playing or pretending to live for some sort of interest group (whether it's the environmentalists, the racists, the fishermen, or motorists seems to make little difference) while dipping their snouts into the trough.
But, with that being said, it's the day-to-day stuff. If you do something and I don't have to wait at my local level crossing for ten minutes every day? That's nice, I suppose. It could've been done more efficiently, to be sure. And, no, I didn't like forking out for a road we'll never get to drive on. And, yes, I know there's a million other things could've spent the money on ... but, hey, it's not like the other bunch -- or even a hypothetical coalition of minor parties -- would be perfect either. I work in a school, and have a strong opinion about the Opposition wanting to bring back religious education during class time. And, too, I was deeply bothered by them making a song and dance about the EBA the professional firefighters got. Like, sure, it was really generous ... but I just didn't have it in me to be offended by the State being kind to people who earn a crust running into burning buildings. I have a bigger problem with obscene pensions and the amount of 'holidays' our politicians get. I'm glad I live in a marginal seat. Whoever wins will do whatever we want just so they can stay in power at the following election. I couldn't imagine being 'loyal' to any one party.
