new shellfish reef

Post by Nude up » Tue Jun 05, 2018 7:09 pm

I was walking the dog tonight on portarlington pier when I saw a barge loaded up with the latest addition to the shellfish reef being built just off portarlington. The reef is being built in quite shallow water which suprised me its in less than 2 mt of water but will be able to be reached with a small walk.

They put 3 artificial reefs just off the portarlington pier in around 5 to 6 mt about 70mt out the fishing has picked up heaps since then they are the concrete hexagon shape. The shellfish reefs will be loaded with baby oysters and mussels in an attempt to bring back the shellfish decimated during the scallop dredging years

Do they just drop the whole crate to the bottom and leave it there or do they empty it from above ?

That's relief, leaving a basket like that in two meters of water would certainly wipe out a prop at low tide !
