Never knew you can set the temperature on a evaporative cooler.

I understand you can control the temperature on a refrigerator cooler but how can a evaporative cooler have a set temperature seems strange.
Yeah i cant set mine either . I just whack the fan on 1 or 2 bars under full strength in the morning and its refreshing when i get home.
If you put them on after its already hot they are useless. Useless when its humid also.

Cheap to run so leave them on.

Because you are asking I am guessing the house is new to you?
If so, then previous owners may have turned the water off to the roof (recommended when not in use to save evaporation)
So make sure the water is getting to the unit (will have a ball float valve like on a dunny)
If water is getting there, next thing to check is the water pump, these often fail.
With water in the tray, does the water pump and dribble onto the mats?
Also make sure you have enough water getting to to tops of the mats.
If that's all ok, then only item remaining is mats need replacing.

Now with all that said, remember an evap cooler will not work on humid days.

I live in Alice Springs and for 99% of summer, an evap cooler is the best thing invented.
But when it rains, they are a terrible thing to have.
I see if i can find a way onto the roof.ill check out the water tap and check out a few things

I think a current affairs had a show on aircons and evaporate coolers cost about $4 a hour to run and were double the cost of split systems

We got ours installed 5 years ago and when the bloke installed it he said it was about 10 cents an hour to run. Dont turn it off because that where the cost comes from the water..
We have it running more often than not when temps are 25 or over. I can tell you it wouldnt be anywhere near 4 bux an hour or my mrs wouldnt put it on
Im no expert by all means but is say it would be cents not dollars per hour.

Just had a quick google.
At a cost of $0.15 per Kwh (Kilowatts per Hour), the A/C systems costs $1.13 per hour to run where by the Evaporative cooler cost is only $0.26 per hour.

The house was built about 5 years ago so presume the evap cooling went in then or somewhere near then

Split systems are more expensive to run as they have to power a fan inside, and power a condensor unit outside which has a fan and other moving parts to cool the refrigerant. Evaps only have a single fan and a low wattage water pump. Once you get into ducted splits the price to run and install jumps very quickly with bigger moving parts needing more power to run
