If you got the dimensions of the seal i could let you know.. As i work at a Bearing shop, we deal with oil seals all the time.

Check out http://www.boats.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Most parts for Johnson/evinrude are used year after year. You will probably find that seal is used for say an 80-90 model. So you should be able to get a price from them .

went saw it tonight , looked ok , guy started it twice with no water running thorugh cause it would leak ... only had it running for 5 secs or so but it started straight away twice.
Leak is in seal just above prop , so bottom seal id say.
was thinking if i could get for around 1700 might be worth chucking new 30 hp mercury or vortex on it, any idea what hull alone b worth
Will try get n get a proffesiona boat inspection on it before thursday as someone else looking at it on thursday...
any thoughts

Hard to say exactly what ther cost would be to replace the seal.
If it's just the seal it could be quite cheap, but if the seal surface on the shaft is damaged, just replacing the seal won't fix any leaks.
The shaft may require reworking (or possibly a speedy sleeve).
If water has enetered the gearbox & damaged the bearings, oir if the gearbox has run out of oil, etc it could be quite costly.
Really needs disassembley to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Honest opinion bowl and I'm no expert when it comes to outboards but if the bottom seal is gone on the gearbox , chances are the boat was in the water when the seal has gone so I'd bet that gearbox is full of milk. But on further inspection of those photos one is shown with a bucket with what looks like traces of oil on the bottom and possibly a bottle of gear oil in it ? Thus I would assume it was full of milk and he doest want to run water through the motor because he will contaminate the fresh oil? But hey I might reading too much into it.
Regardless of this starting a motor for even10 seconds with no water..........no good. if he's had 5 other people look at the boat there's a minute straight away with no water, the impeller would she shot for starters.
Definitely get a qualified person to look at it but IMO I'd be looking at buying that for the right price with the intention of re powering .

If you can get $1700 for it and the trailer and hull is A+, I would buy it ASAP. That's dirt cheap.

For 2k you can pick up a brand new Mercury (15hp) or something bigger second hand.

Save the $$$ on the inspection and use it if you decide to buy another motor.

Who knows what other problems the motor has. Im sure you could sell it for $450.

Good luck and happy boating.
