You don't need twins these days, My Honda is awesome, top speed of 40 knots. Hasn't ever missed a beat.
I've had 2 Honda's and 1 Merc, all the same these days.
My next cruiser will only have 1 engine.

Re: Buying new boat
Twin are essential for us we are not fishing in ppb.
New clean tec motors are less reliable than the last of the carby 2 strokes but that is not ot the main driving factor.
We are currently adding a 25hp auxiliary to the 650f as we are planning a trip 130km offshore.
We often fish in locations where there is no coast guard and very few trailers at the ramp.

Re: Buying new boat
Fair enough, I fish for tuna at Portland and have had no issue so far, I guess 1 day it may happen, fingers crossed the gods are on our side.
If you fish that far offshore, I'd be looking at a bigger boat than mine.
I'm no fan of 2 strokes, way to smelly for me. 4 stroke all the way. IMO

Re: Buying new boat
2 strokes have their place.
IMO it is not about how far offshore but more about getting assistance. Plenty of boats out from Portland during tuna season so not an issue.
But crossing the ditch and long runs where there are no other boats within radio range I want a backup donk.
