Westernport deep water berley bucket.

Post by beefy » Mon Mar 07, 2022 8:42 pm

Just completed this berley bucket but it's as yet untested. Still thought I'd just show you in case you wanted a laugh.

The cord is Dyneema, and rated at about 120 kg, but it's very thin. I'm guessing braid may be made of this. Got it off Ebay, and I think it gets used on big kites a lot.

Hopefully the spike on the bottom will help stop the current pushing the berley pot along. I've got big stainless weights bolted to the bottom too on the inside.

I've heard sharks sometimes come to check out the berley pots so put a length of stainless rope too.

All criticisms welcome, I can only come away wiser.

Looks good, just don't attach it to your anchor.

I've also been informed that due to the size/height it has a lot of surface area and strong current may still sweep it away. I've got an extra big block of lead I could add if necessary. Heck if I add that I may not need an anchor LOL.

Must remember to come back to this thread after some real world tests in strong tidal flow in deep water and report if it went well or was a complete failure.

Just a guess but judging by the long shape i think the spike won't do much because the tube will just topple over. You could replace the spike with something that sticks out the sides to stop it from rolling (think like what your anchor looks like)

Otherwise it looks pretty cool.

For a heavy burley bucket I just bought a regular wire one from the tackle shop and then took the steel weight off the bottom, put the bottom of the cage in an old stainless dogs bowl and then Filled it with molten lead and let it set. It popped out no problem and weighs about 10 bloody Kilo. It works a treat in WP currents but nobody wants to be the guy to lift it from 20m down. Doesn’t get used that often any more tbh.
