On the water for under 10k?

Post by minimal » Thu Jan 03, 2013 9:48 pm

Okay, so this is probably a huge pipe dream and the reality of boat ownership will be both too troublesome and costly to be a reality. HOWEVER... allow me to dream for a moment!

My question then, is do you think you could realistically get a 'fit-for-purpose' vessel for fishing in Port Phillip Bay for under 10k? (all in... everything)

Some criteria:

- Stable enough that it would not be a death trap if the water started to get choppy
- Big enough to comfortably fit at least two blokes fishing
- Generally reliable - i.e. would most likely not cost 3x as much in repairs and upgrades than the initial outlay
- Powerful enough that you could at least head out to some deeper water (whilst not necessarily needing to travel huge distances)

I know this isn't a boating forum per se, but interested to hear any thoughts or recommendations (the world of boating is incredibly baffling to the uninitiated...)

I'm sure it's possible, have you had a look around on boatsales.com.au? You can get a brand new quintrex tinnie that would suit very calm bay conditions for that much so I'm sure you can find something 2nd hand.

Constantly keep browsing gumtree, boat sales and the trading post... put some hours into researching forums on boating basics such as discovering old posts. Even consider buying some beginners boating books. These are all the things I did to pick up my center console boat for 5 grand! There are bargains out there you just got to keep looking and have patience.

Hey nice one Beno - assuming that is the craft featured in some of your vids, right?

I assumed that sort of thing would be in $20k plus - I've seen nothing sub $20k yet that you'd be comfortable heading out in the bay in!

Cheers Linc - looking those up right now! ;-)

look for a 2nd hand quintrex escape, I got mine new for $18K they regularly sell 2nd hand for between 14-16K but there's gotta be some cheaper ones, they're plenty big enough for the bay, a very dry ride in rough conditions

10k wont buy much.

The sub 10k boats are either really small or often in need of extensive $$$ in the near future. Pretty much every sub 10k boat I have seen will be needing a new donk electronics and trailer in the not to distance future.

IMO you are better to keep saving and look at the boats in the 15-20k bracket. You can find some really good boats in this price range such as fairly new 16ft tinnies or older 17ft fiberglass boats that have been repowered, trailers replaced and updated electronics. Most of these boats are ready to go and will give years of trouble free service.

Hey mate,
im in the exact same 'boat' as you. I have been dreaming for a while of buying a sub 10k boat in the next few years with the same criteria as you so i look on boatsales daily. There are plenty of nice half-cabs on there for 5k-8k, with the more expensive ones being setup better for fishing ppb.

here are a few that i found in the first few pages of boatsales after making the criteria $7,500-$10,000 in vic.

http://www.boatsales.com.au/boats-for-s ... =40&eapi=2

http://www.boatsales.com.au/boats-for-s ... =48&eapi=2

Obviously these boats will need some work to make them your own but they are a great starting point. If you have the skill you could really work these boats into something great and learn a lot along the way, before upgrading to something bigger

I notice most boats in that list are 14-15ft.

IMO you are much better off going to a 16-17ft if you can tow and store it. Additional cost is minimal but even 30cm increase in size at that end of the scale makes a huge difference in the water.

PS most of those boats need or will need very soon new motors and/or trailers.
