On two occasions I have buried the bow of my boat into waves whilst exiting that entrance. Getting absolutely drenched on one occasion as the clears were pushed in.
Although not the current fashion this is one of the reasons why the man hole type canopy is better than a bimimi plus clears.

The water goes over the top rather than pushing/ripping the clears off.

Entering the Patterson River on these occasions, also have a challenge, as the outgoing water/tide meets waves travelling west to east, this creates pressure waves and entering the river a boat can broach.
Just like the first two in this video.

I thought coming back in would be a piece of **** compared with timing an attempt at getting out.

Don’t you just wait for a likely looking wave and sit on the back of it while making sure the one behind isn’t catching up, and when the one in front breaks just fang it over the white water?

I much prefer going out through the surf in the kayak because coming back in through surf you don’t have the option of going quick enough to keep out of the way of the waves coming up behind you. They catch you eventually and you’ve just got to try and a) stay upright and b) avoid getting turned side on for long enough that it has turned into a foot or so of white water.

It’s not a bar but we did have a damp start to the day once at Apollo Bay. That warning sign isn’t obvious in the dark and we got smashed by a wave that hit the boat at about 45 degrees to the centerline

Coming back in the Western Entrance to Western Port bay, can be interesting, unlike most of the videos, the Western Entrance is fairly long. Coming back in, one day the waves were about 2 metres high, with the occasional white water, keeping the boat from surfing down the front of the waves, meant feathering the speed and sometimes a wave would just flatten out and the following wave would speed up, trying to bury the bow into the next wave.

MacCafferties reef area can be pretty bad.

I am not a boating person but could some of the 'luck' have something to do with the quality of the boat...stability or similar?

Wind is one problem swell and tide direction are the other hazards.

Yeah, Bugatti, you have it. It showed he was inexperienced. An inexperienced person should not use a day like that to gain experience. They should go on flat days until they learn how to setup and drive their boat over bars. If the waves are breaking where you want to go and it is your first or one of just a few times, then stay home.
Heading to Apollo bay next month and that presents a challenge exiting and entering the harbour. It usually means sitting in the harbour until a set has gone through, poking the nose out looking for a spot that is flatter than the rest. Timing is important, especially if there are surfers, surfing the break wall.
Places like Apollo Bay and Warnambool it's well worth paying close attention to not just the wind forecasts but the swell forecasts also. There is no way I would roll into those towns with no idea of the swell conditions.
