Help using fish finder
Hey guys, I just bought a new fish finder and turned it into a portable device that clips the transducer on the end of the boat. But i get this strange fuzzy stuff showing on the surface. Any idea whats wrong with it? It's a lowrance hook2 4x. I know it still works because i can sound up my sinker and the anchor when it drops down, and also seen giant arches before from when a pod of dolphins swam under the boat.
Re: Help using fish finder
I hope someone answers you as I have a new Lowrance and am wondering the same thing.

Re: Help using fish finder
its your surface clarity, set it to medium or high. (read the manual to find how to do that) this will also affect the sonar slightly so its a compromise.

Re: Help using fish finder
You guys are awesome, thanks a lot! Gonna play around with the settings tonight. The manual is useless though...

Re: Help using fish finder
It's just disturbances around the transducer, prop wash, air running under the boat, the actual movement of water around the boat etc. it's a non issue. Either use the electronic trickery purple suggested, but that can affect readings, reduce gain/sensitivity so it's not as pronounced, again affects overall readings or just leave it and learn to live with it

Re: Help using fish finder
There's actually no surface clarity settings on this model. But i might try the zoom to skip the surface or mess with the sensitivity. I had it all set on auto. Have to wait for another nice day to test it out on the water

Re: Help using fish finder
Just tested it yesterday, turned the depth to manual and played with the zoom and that did the trick. Even sounded up a few very clear arches which im guessing was either dusky morwong or squid in around 7m of water.
Just small flatties around yesterday which im guessing dont usually register on the sounder anyway coz they stick to the bottom. But otherwise really clear with the auto sensitivity. When it shows no fish, you also catch nothing
