That is sad.

Only speculating but it sounds like the deceased may not have been wearing a PFD. It always pays to wear life jackets or at least have them in a ready and easily accessible place, especially so if miles offshore and the conditions are poor.

I don't go anywhere without a life jacket and PLB attached to it. The other point that most boaters miss is that while your boat is designed with flotation to stop it sinking , it does not hold it level nor is it able to support all the extra gear you take. I added a boat collar that will support an extra 300kg and make the boat float level.
You have to plan for the worst case or you end up like these people

It appears the man was wearing a life jacket and became trapped under the hull of tha 18 foot cat.
