Anchors

Post by Wolly Bugger » Fri Aug 31, 2018 12:41 pm

When I first bought my boat, it had a Sarca anchor and the chain was covered by the chain guard.

First launch in PPB, put the anchor down near Sunny Side and we start drifting, pull the anchor chain up. NO Anchor!

Buy another anchor a plough , to fit and notice that the chain guard now is longer than the chain.

Eventually find a cheap Sarca on the internet and buy that one, replace the plough with the Sarca.

Go fishing then after a while, put the anchor down and we start drifting again, pull the anchor chain up and NO Anchor again. Head back to Carrum and purchase another anchor, from the shop. Notice that the anchor guard seems to have moved further down the chain, Whilst fitting the new anchor to the chain the chain falls apart.

End up taking the anchor guard off, and I find sections of chain falling apart at the weld point.

Purchase new chain, left the anchor guard off, and I have been using the plough anchor, which takes a bit of setting at times, then I was lucky that Moose Marine was getting rid of excess stock and I got a LSM MMX size 2 which I got to use the other day and it set first go,

Needless to say I am impressed with this new anchor. Now I excess plough anchors

I did tell you the plough was a **** anchor.

They don't hold well compared with other options.

Glad to hear you have it sorted.

As per Purple comments avoid using the anchor and you will catch more fish.

Or only offer to pull up the anchor if it's a push button winch like I do ;)

That’s an expensive exercise alright!
Have never once had a problem with my Sarca anchor.
Glad it worked out for you in the end though!

I had similar issues with my last boat. Rope failed - anchor gone, then chain failed - anchor gone. Both were plough anchors and let go of the bottom pretty often. Current boat has a Sarca #2 and has never given me issues (yet).

I have never heard of the chain failing at the welds mostly shackles and ropes not attached to the boat. I will give my chain the once over now

Use good quality chain, go the heavier gauge and you can also have less chain this way to.

I personally am not a fan of those chain guards due to the fact that it makes it harder to rinse off properly with fresh water at the end of the day.

On my old boat I used to always use a sand /mud anchor and never had issues with it letting go. They key was to rig it correct so that if it snags you can drive back over it and it would pull out.

After loosing the second one i would have investigated further.
Nothing worse then loosing money to the bottom.
Glad you got it working right now.

Just shows you need to be quite vigilant from top to bottom
