Thanks Frozenbpod
So I'm thinking that I need to get this 'donk' checked out by an expert.
Are major issues reasonably easy to detect and can you recommend someone good in Melbourne?

Two years ago we swapped the 6 cyclinder cummins out of the 11mtr survey vessel. it had 15,000hrs on it. or thereabouts. The New one now has 1000hrs on it. Looked after they go for a long time.

I doubt it would be salt water cooled. It will most likely have normal coolant in the engine and then a heat exchanger that has salt water running through it. The heat exchanger can develop a lot of corrosion if the anodes aren't changed and proper maintenance done on it. If it doesn't have a heat exchanger then it may have keel cooling pipes i.e. the coolant is circulated though pipes that are external to the hull. As mentioned above any repairs will be very expensive. However diesels are safe and reliable motors that can last a lifetime.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.
