Mercury 75hp vs Suzuki 70hp fourstroke
I have a Quintrex 475 Freedom Sport with a 2001 Mercury 60hp fourstroke on it. The years haven't fared the old merc too well and we are looking to repower, something with a bit more guts. Mainly use our boat for estuary, river, port phillip, light offshore work, wakeboarding and skiing. We have narrowed the field down to the Mercury 75hp and Suzuki 70hp fourstrokes. Has anyone had good or bad experiences with these or similar sized motors? Is there much benefit with add ons like vessel view?

Re: Mercury 75hp vs Suzuki 70hp fourstroke
Both the Merc and the Suzuki are damn good motors Simmo, couldn't go wrong with either brand.
Both are around the 158-163 kg mark,
But I believe the Merc 75, is a 2,1 litre vrs the Suzuki which is a 1.5 litre
Nothing compares to more cubes !
The Merc's new design makes it a doddle to service it yourself once out of warrantee as well.
I like the Suzuki engine, but in the lower range 70-115, I think Merc definately have it over them.
More Grunt, larger cubic capacity, roughly the same weight.
Easy decision between the two !
Have you checked out the price comparison between the two ??????

Blacklab said it, there's no replacement for displacement. Merc 2.1l detuned 115 capable of 130hp, Suzuki 1.5l detuned 90 (the 100 is rung out to the max). Vesselview is brilliant, every bit of data you could want in front of your eyes on a single screen. The Merc (2.1l 75-115proxs) has been out for a few years now with not to many problems, and the company going all out on 4s in all size classes the last 12 months.
I've got experience with current Suzukis in a different size, rev limiting itself at 3200rpm, constant overheating alarms with no issues with engine temps, nor logged on computer or obvious faults with electronics, full and complete wiring looms and electronics replacement for little improvement (except now has full rev range again) and close to the end of warranty period and it hasn't ticked over 1000 hours... But until those issues it was great all the time

Just to make it harder...Honda has the longest warranty and Yamaha has the best re-sale

Add Tohatsu and Etec G2 to your list as well.
IMO there are no bad new motors it is all about the best boat motor combination ie hp to weight and good local dealer/service center.
For your application I would be looking at a 90Hp motor.

Exactly this. My local dealer is a suzuki dealership if it were Yamaha I would have probably taken one of them.frozenpod wrote:Add Tohatsu and Etec G2 to your list as well.

But I have pretty much the same boat as the OP but the savage brand, 70 is more than enough!

If your planning watersports, go max hp.....should be able to squeeze a 90-115hp weight wise...what's the recommended max hp on the plate?Kimtown wrote:Exactly this.
