Boat covers

Post by Yota » Tue Jul 10, 2018 7:51 pm

Hi all, I'm after some advice about boat covers.
Up until now I've had a cheapie that cost about $250 ish from memory. It lasted a year before it started tearing at the rubbing points on the top of the T top. So I sacrificed the storage bag and over the months patched it up a dozen times. Now it's 2 years old and literally shredding to bits in the wind.
So I got a quote from a marine upholsterer for $2600 for a sunbrella material custom cover, it's got a 10 year guarantee.
So even buying a cheapie cover every year still breaks even compared to a $2600 cover with a 10 year warranty, so I'm open to thoughts about a big outlay vs a cheapie.
Who's got a decent cover and how do they go ?
Cheers.

I've got a very good one on my boat but it still rips.cost 2700.

I've repaired it a few times allready and strengthened it up a few times.

Its waterproof and I sleep under it on alot off trips.its travelled at least 20 thousand kms allready and seem shut winds ect while towing.

But I've often thought maybe I should off just bought a shot one every year for 200 bucks from bcf.

It's a 50/50

Good travel cover is worth it and should last. Ours is 20 years old one rip which was our fault and patched. Used all the time on long trips, reduces drag and keeps everything nice and dry.

whats the benefits of actually having a boat travel cover?

apart from the obvious dust not settling on the boat when its in storage, what other benefits are there?

i considered one just for the front of my boat as mine is a centre console and the console itself actually gets bugs splattered on it everytime i travel at night.
im not sold on the whole reducing drag thing either (specially in mycase where its even more obvious with the console sticking up past the car)
but what else would it help with, 2.5k is quite a lot of money for a cover

Drag reduction depends on the boat design, with a half cab the drag reduction is the same as a ute cover.

Keeping rain out so your gear doesn't get wet is also a good thing.

Thanks everyone for the replies that’s what I’m after. Some opinions I guess.
I wouldn’t use a cover during transport. I’m only interested in keeping the boat out of the weather when stored. I don’t have a shed or area big enough to keep it in ( out of the weather)
I park the boat beside the house.
Just want to keep the sun from deteriorating the whole lot - boat, trim, electronics etc etc.
And to stop water pooling inside corners I guess.

if its only storage for home, have you considered getting a pergola or some sort of carport for that sort of price??
