No law for rated shackles. It’s a recommendation only, NOT LAW

Actually, looking back at my records, because I fished Eden, mine were changed, they definatley policed this,
I'll try and find the article in question, but there was definatley a blitz and boaties were fined.
I remember the " no such rule" comments at the time.

Looks like NSW does not even mention shackles.

Correct, my mistake,
I changed mine to a stronger d shackel when the rumors arose, and they were just that.
What the standards say or how they are rated, is only a lifting rating, not specifically for safety chain application.
I changed mine as I could see a change coming because of this.......

it is always an interesting read but then even the wording is there to mislead you

recommended and note that is recommended shackle rating ( break load rating 1.5 the ATM ) -- note the wording Break load rating - rated shackles don't display a break load rating it has the WLL-- working load rating

there is a huge different in the 2 - WLL is the rating where a shackle may deform but go back to it's normal form once the load is released about 6 times it's breaking strain

so that being said a 5 mm rated shackle has a WLL rating of 330 Kg or about a 1.98 Tonne braking load rating

most of use use an 8 mm shackle rated 750 Kg WLL or about 4.5 tonne breaking then we use 2 in most cases
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

Looks like Tasmania has more details on shackle but again it's a recommendation.

You can see they use WLL in their document instead of breaking, and as expected WLL is below BLL. AND recommended WLL is way below the trailer ATM. In fact looks like WLL is 25% of ATM whereas BLL has to be at least 150% of trailer ATM.
