At 17-20k for a new 4 stroke you can buy a hell of a lot of fuel.

Sorry mate I cant agree with that, the fuel consumption is close to double what it should be the for the motor and hull.

Pretty clear there are issues with the setup, as previously reported running rough, stalling and a plug lead fell off during this trip.

They are a carby engine that on a 5.6mtr boat, is underpowered (in my opinion 13yr marine mech) (it will be withing their recommended HP range, but its on the lower end id suggest). Also depends on the weight of the boat, how much gear you had, how many people, what sort of conditions you were in, how old the fuel was, quality of the fuel...i could keep going.

Most new fourstrokes are getting 1.5+km per litre. You have a 2 stroke carby, using 1-1.5ltrs per km...id be happy with that. If you are expecting more from it...you are going to be dissapopinted.
Easy soultion...fit a new motor to the max hp of the hull... ;)
Wish i had the money for a 4 stroke

the new 4 stroke was a tongue in cheek remark... i understand people cant afford that... It was more a "you want to use less fuel...buy a new fourstroke" comment...
i still think for the boat specs you have given us...i dont see you using less fuel. Unless you have noted the same exact conditions and a different reading...its pretty close to what you would expect.

With all the specs and information you have given, I don't think you are going to get much better economy. Servicing, fresh fuel and maybe a prop change to get you revving to maybe 5800 rpm at wot may get you 10 to15 percent better overall. You have to remember it's a carbi 2 stroke. Maybe talk to a service centre that does racing engines as they have the technology and knowhow to get the best out of your rigs setup. ie max economy and power from the engine and also water drag on engine/prop and hull. Best of luck.
