Fuel useage good or bad for a 2 stroke.

Post by smile0784 » Mon Jun 11, 2018 8:37 am

So after a big day out yesterday wolly showed me a few things on the gps.
So we reset the trip timer and away we went.

Went got back the trip timer was 99.4 km.
On 120lt of fuel.
Works out 1.2lt p/km

Is that good or bad for a 115 johnson 2 stroke?

I'm not sure wetter tgat good or bad. But I think your motor needs a service by a good mechanic.
And change that anode to a non painted one too..

Also I'm fairly sure the trip meter would not be accurate if you drifted .

We weren't drifting that much either crusing at 3800 revs to and from60 meter in bass strait or trolling

3800 rpm wouldn’t be an economical cruise? Most boats best litres/km come when running 4300-4900rpm.

I generally run mine at just below WOT at all times because it’s a 60hp and my thirstiest session covering 90 odd kms chewed around 26 litres at a mix of wot and 4800rpm which is 0.28 litres/km. Cheap as chips.

Sounds pretty thirsty, even for a 2 stroke.

By comparison, my old extreme with the 115hp Yamaha 4stroke on the back would burn about 45L over the same distance.

I reckon that’s bad on my previous boat it had a 130hp Yamaha 2 stroke it used about .8 of a litre per k on a good note my 200 hp Yamaha 4 stroke and a bigger boat uses .8 litre per k as I explained that to my wife cost neutral. I cruise around 4600 rpm about 50 kph

Looking back at yesterday.

Firstly I think fuel quality was a factor in economy. I found that old quality fuel gives inferior performance not only in power, but in distance.

Secondly we found that a spark plug lead was off, for how long I don;t know.

So it is worth doing another test.

The other was the refill, how old was that fuel in the jerrycan?

I had an experience with my Merc 15 2 stroke, that it would run like a dog, missing, loosing power, cutting out, it wasn't until I put some fuel I had purchased that day into the tank did the issues go away.

Dodgy fuel from a servo can also cause issues.

My suzuki when I first bought it, had old stale fuel in the tank and it was not until I used that up did performance and economy improve.
