Re: Nissan X-Trail as a tow vehicle?
Hi guys just thought I'd update you. I managed to borrow a mates car and took my rig to a weight bridge. $1550kg with a half tank of fuel and usual gear.
Regarding the car, we bought a 2013 mazda cx-5 maxx sport AWD twin turbo diesel.

Didn't know cx-5's came in twin turbo diesel. Mazda's are good cars. :thumbsup:ChrisAbout wrote:Hi guys just thought I'd update you. I managed to borrow a mates car and took my rig to a weight bridge. $1550kg with a half tank of fuel and usual gear.

Better watch out for those "road safety cameras"

1800kg tow capacity is cutting it very fine for a 1550kg load. Fill the petrol tank, add some mates and gear in the boot and it will be over the limit.

Not sure where you got your figures from but my lc200 vzx gcm 6800kg gvm 3350kg car weighs 2705kg with 3500 kg on the back leaves about 595kg to play with. Bt50 gcm 6000kg gvm 3200kg car weighs 2100kg with 3500kg on the back leaves about 400kg.frozenpod wrote::thumbsup: Yep and this is why a BT50 can carry more gear and legally tow more than a 200 series.cobby wrote:It's all to do with GCM. If that figure is 5500kg, Max towing is 3500kg and car weight is 1750kg you have a maximum of 250kg of additional weight before your 3500kg towing capacity is reduced. If 5 passengers weigh a total of 550kg then your maximum towing capacity is reduced to 3200kg
All needs to be factored in most vehicles tow ratings when you add gear reduce by 10-20%.
Xtrail for example with people and gear would be legally able to tow 1600kg which is a very realistic maximum rating for the vehicle.
The bt50 can not tow 3500kg at its gvm where the lc200 can.so the statement the bt50 can carry more gear and legally tow more is not true.

To clarify my previous comment the tray version (1820kg) of the BT-50 can have a payload capacity of 680kg whilst towing 3500kg at 6000kg GCM.

LOL I usually put my mates in the car when I tow the boat around.
It'll be fine ... have been towing it for 2 years with a 1500kg rated fwd astra without any issues.

There’s a rather large difference between what’s “fine” and what’s legal though...
