Anchor setup for WP advice
Been fishing WP for several good years. Lately I've enjoyed fishing for gummies the area between McHaffies Point and beyond the Fairway buoy in 20m+ water.
The problem I've been recently having is anchor not holding (I should say slipping). It kind of feels like it catches, but then it slips off and the boat goes with the tide, then it will catch again for a second then go with the tide.
My anchor setup is
45m rope (10mm bunnings poly) + 8.4m chain (6mm bunnings long-link) + 7.3kg anchor (BLA sand)
My boat is 5.7m long
Any suggestions?

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
Is it a sand anchor?
I have the same issue. Need to buy a sarca or plough anchor

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
When we first started fishing the wntrance we were told to double you boats length with anchor chain because of the tide. You need the anchor to bury down so thats where the extra chain comes in with its weight.
We never drifted.
When we got an electric anchor fitted the standard kit didnt come with extra chain and we drifted also. Got an extra 2 meters of chain and problem solved.
Even when you think you are on the bottom down there you need to let more anchor rope out than in slower tidal flows. I always allow and extra 5 - 7 meters.
Hope this helps

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
I think that area of westenport is mainly sand and if your staying for the full tide change with the tide running hard your boat will lift the chain up and the anchor will drag anchor.
I had the same problem with a full running tide.
Only thing i could think of is to get a thicker chain thats heavier
Or a plough anchor

I've got a plough anchor which was on the boat originally, but i took it off and replaced it with a sand one (thinking that a sand bottom requires a sand anchor).
Usually in 30m of water, I leave out 48m of (rope + chain).

from what i have looked into, length of rope when anchored should generally be 3 times or more than the depth your anchored in as a minimum

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
If the tide is flowing hard you need 2to 3 times the depth your in. The chain should be big enough to keep anchor dug into bottom

There's no way I can fit more rope and chain on my electric winch unless i spool it with thinner rope.purple5ive wrote:Thats your first problem.ChrisAbout wrote:I've got a plough anchor which was on the boat originally, but i took it off and replaced it with a sand one (thinking that a sand bottom requires a sand anchor).

Also, why does everyone recommend short link chain instead of the regular link one?
