Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
I have a sarca, with about 10mtrs of chain on a 5.3mtr quinnie. Never had an issue with it not holding. Generally if you have a good chain length and decent anchor if it's not holding you need to let out more rope.

Well either get a bigger drum or use the dyneema rope, not going to be cheap excercise i think.ChrisAbout wrote:There's no way I can fit more rope and chain on my electric winch unless i spool it with thinner rope.purple5ive wrote:Thats your first problem.ChrisAbout wrote:I've got a plough anchor which was on the boat originally, but i took it off and replaced it with a sand one (thinking that a sand bottom requires a sand anchor).
Usually in 30m of water, I leave out 48m of (rope + chain).
from what i have looked into, length of rope when anchored should generally be 3 times or more than the depth your anchored in as a minimum

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
but even if I was to buy a Sarca anchor, it appears I still need to somehow house over 90m of rope and 8m of chain. This would allow me to anchor in 30m of water regardless of the anchor, right?
Considering that at the moment I have 40m x 10mm rope and 8m x 8mm chain, I should be able to get away with having 100m x 6mm rope and 8m x 6mm chain.
This might work

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
Chris about I think you definitely need more rope, a couple of extra meters of chain wouldn't hurt either. Have always used a Barca anchor myself and found it to be pretty good.
As far as rope to fit on your winch maybe talk to CH Smith marine, Whitworth's or similar they will be able to help.

More weight per meter.ChrisAbout wrote:Also, why does everyone recommend short link chain instead of the regular link one?

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
I think the rope you have is 1600kg rated when looking at simular 10mm rope on ebayChrisAbout wrote:Been fishing WP for several good years. Lately I've enjoyed fishing for gummies the area between McHaffies Point and beyond the Fairway buoy in 20m+ water.
The problem I've been recently having is anchor not holding (I should say slipping). It kind of feels like it catches, but then it slips off and the boat goes with the tide, then it will catch again for a second then go with the tide.
My anchor setup is
45m rope (10mm bunnings poly) + 8.4m chain (6mm bunnings long-link) + 7.3kg anchor (BLA sand)
My boat is 5.7m long
Any suggestions?
You can buy 8mm rope with same rating
50mt x 8mm for $82

Re: Anchor setup for WP advice
More rope. Atleast 60m needed, preferably closer to 100m. And swap back to the plough. They're perfectly fine in sand/mud once dug in, no different to a sand anchor (which is all about surface area buried in the sand vs the ploughs design and pointed weight pushing it under and holding it there). The whole issue of slipping is occurring simply because the swell is raising the boat, changing the angle on the sand anchor due to not enough length out causing it to pop out or off of what it's holding onto
