If you can stretch the budget I'd go for this
http://www.bcf.com.au/Product/Striker-F ... ers/528806

It will et you going and teach you the basics in what to look for.

A lot of members here like to go for the top of the range gear and fail to remember not all ppl can afford this, the garmins are great bang for buck.

https://buy.garmin.com/en-AU/AU/p/59210 ... -01872-01#

Or just drop 2" of screen, go over budget by only a pineapple, gain the ability to create your own maps with this. It's just the updated version Of The original striker series.

Having used Lowrance and Garmin, Garmin sonar performance ***** on lowrances.

I have a lawrance hds 12 and 9.

There both very good.

I have the hds for the big screen when im driving in places that are a bit dangerous or i dont have experience there.

The big screen is handy.

Also being a newbie I would recommend you keep saving so you can get a combo unit. I just put in a Garmin 7 inch. I was going to go with the striker model, No maps but it does allow you to draw your own and put in way points, but upgraded to the one with maps. Around $1,000.00 mark. So pleased I went with maps as it clearly shows were the shallow points are as well as the deep spots. Makes finding your way around new areas so much easier. I like seeing exactly where the different channels are. I had to wait an extra year to get the funds but was so worth it.

No idea sorry as I have never used that app.
I do prefer the bigger screen than I have on my phone though
