Engine options

Post by Boxhead » Thu Oct 05, 2017 12:34 pm

Hi all,
Last month I finally got the chance to put my boat in the water.
All was going well until the motor stopped.
I really like the boat (15ft fibreglass half cabin) for what my intended purposes are.
Current engine is an old (1982) 25hp Mercury 2 stroke.
I could get the old motor looked at and fixed, but I figure I want ease of use and no hassles, so I am looking at a new 4 stroke.
Looking at my options it appears the Yamaha may be my best choice (EFI and short shaft), I can get this in the 25hp.
Does anyone have feedback on this engine option?
Or any recommendations on others to look at?

Yamaha or Suzuki, can't go wrong. Pick whatever is the closer dealership.

Personally, I got the Suzuki, prefer the colour of them too :)

Just working out.
Roughly going to cost $3500 + install unless you do it your self.
How much life does the trailer have left? Probably cost $1500+

In a few years will will the transom and stringers need doing costing few thousand.

Just a thought to consider

You could also look for a 2 stroke or used motor.

Probably worth finding out what went wrong with the current motor.

Hi Boxhead just wondering if you might consider upping the hp a bit from 25 if you are buying a new motor. For a boat that size with 2-3 people on board with gear the 25 would be struggling a bit? Just a thought.

All valid points
I am very capable of fitting myself, but also happy to pay for it to be fitted.
Trailer has all new wheels, tyres, bearings, frame is rust free, has new wiring and LED lights. (Plus I live less than 1 kl from ramp I use)

Not sure what the future holds for the transom and stringers, but currently they are perfect and rot free.
Future use is purely closed waters on Glenelg river, this is also the same river it has done its life so far on, as previous owner lived in same village and boat was rarely used.

I am retiring soon and just want many many years of hassle free boating, hence happy to spend the money now, and spend it once.
Rather than fixing old motor, just to have something else fail in the near future.

For the 45 minutes or so that it was working, the boat felt plenty powerful enough, but I am also pricing 30hp engines.
It really comes down to manufacturers who do them in a short shaft (Honda don't).
So far Mercury, Yamaha & Suzuki do.
I am not keen on Mercury as it is a carby fed system, and I will be doing slow trolling (more control with EFI) from memory the 30 is EFI

the old motor would have weighed quite a lot more than the current models available, so a bigger motor might be the go.
also take into account servicing costs of 4 stroke.
also dont discount the direct injection 2 strokes which are also EFI

If your happy with with everything else spend the money on a good treat.
I just like to weigh up all options befor making a decision.

If its to last your retirement treat your self and buy a newer boat and dont have to worry in a 5 to 10 years.
