2003 115 Johnson Wont Start

Post by Fahro » Fri Aug 25, 2017 11:32 am

As the topic suggests, got an outboard that turns over but will not start!!

I haven't taken it out since April, and it still had the fuel from that trip, also never added any stabilizer to the tank.

Have tried the basics:

- New spark plugs
- Battery (old one went dead), voltage is good at 11v whilst being cranked
- Terminals seem okay

We started it a week ago, and it ran for about 10-15 minutes, then died, turned it back on again and it ran for about 5 mins, died then haven't been able to turn it back on since.
My initial thoughts were bad fuel, however, we have since drained the tank and added about 20l of fresh fuel, but she still wont start!!

My thoughts now are:

1: Bad fuel has gunked up the carbs, which would require a full dismantle and rebuild
2: Possible failure in the Powerpack
3: Coils need replacing

2 stroke or 4?

If 2 stroke remove plugs and make sure they are not fouled up. They get a build up of oil if left idling for too long.

Secondly check you have spark by getting someone to crank the engine while you hold the plug against the block. You should be able to see it.

Its a process of elimination. Check the basics first. Also is the primer coming firm or staying soft.

Oil injected 2 stroke?

Is there a water fuel separator?

Yes, this is an oil injected 2 stroke

I have cleaned the plugs several times, they are brand new.

Primer goes hard after several pumps

I can see that fuel is getting to the carbs

Will keep investigating and advise outcome.

Motor requires, Air, Fuel and Spark.

Check spark as suggested on all cylinders.

Check water fuel separator for water, rust blockages if it is 12 months plus old replace it.
You should be able to feel the primer go firm and increase firmness as each fuel bowl fills with fuel.

Also check fuel primer and lines for pin holes, splits, cracks ect as a pin hole will make starting and idle difficult.

If still no go clean the carbies with carby cleaner.
