Motor service
Hi all I put my 15hp Suzuki in for its first service today. I nearly fell over when he told me the cost. $300 for a first service is this the normal price or does it seem a bit high.

Re: Motor service
You can always learn to do it yourself.. little outboards are **** easy to work on. Spend the cash and buy a workshop manual. It will save you in the end and if anything goes wrong when you are away you might just be able to fix it.

Re: Motor service
I don't know what outboard mechs charge but doing it yourself is incredibly easy if you can spin a spanner. Should be able to knock it over in under an hour with a bit of practice and cost you about $50-$100 in parts if you shop around. The requirements for servicing will be listed In Your owners manual. Just be sure to use correct torques as it's easy to over tighten into alloy and strip threads.

Re: Motor service
Probably a good thread to ask this on.
Got a early 80s Blue series Merc 25hp.
The motor wasn't starting in the water (started fine with ear muffs on), so took it in to get service and apparently the switch box needed to be replaced. So got that done and new plugs put in as well as a service cost around $400 which seemed reasonable to me. They also checked the compression of the cylinders it was 140/125 which from what i've read is about on the limit, but it's not too bad.
My brother took the boat out on the weekend and the problem re-occurred, he was able to start the engine out of the water then tilt it in and the boat ran fine, and he was able to restart the engine in the water (once it was warm). However next day when engine was cold same problem occurred wouldn't start in the water.
It's being taken back to the mechanic this week for them to look over.
However i just wanted to see if anyone had any advice here on what could be causing the issue.
cheers.

Re: Motor service
If it was an issue with the switch box the starter motor wont turn.
Are you using choke and extra throttle to start the motor when cold?

Re: Motor service
I believe the issue with switch box was only affecting 1 cylinder (or so i was told by the mechanic)frozenpod wrote:If it was an issue with the switch box the starter motor wont turn.

Yes choke fully closed and giving extra throttle.
