GPS trip data

In the market for a new GPS. Certain GPS units allow for an nmea connection allowing for linking of compatible electronics, motors and navionics technology.

I'm looking for something that I can download the data of fuel usage over kilometres travel etc. Does any technology savvy boaties use this technology and more importantly provide some feedback recommendations.
