Should there be Boat Catch limits?

Post by Wolly Bugger » Mon Mar 20, 2017 7:57 am

Starting this thread,

Should there be boat limits?
Will this include charters?
How do the boat limits get decided?
What species do boat limits apply too?

And if you feel strongly about this, then lobby your politician.

The rules are, no abuse, no name calling.

For me it comes down to whether or not the current rules are maintaining or growing the fish stocks. If stocks are declining something needs to change which may include the introduction of boat limits.
2015/16 Fisting Victoria Species comp total: 289cm
Brown Trout: 37cm
Flathead: 51cm; Squid: 36cm; Australian Salmon: 51cm; Snapper 46cm; Silver Trevally 23cm; KGW: 45cm

Not at this stage fish stocks are improving allow fisheries management to make those decisions.

I vote for individual bag limits, *BUT* having said that I would like to see each species halved, for example most bay species scale fish are 20, way to many IMO.

I'd personally prefer to see a review of some bag limits. Whether it's two persons on one boat or two persons on a boat each doesn't make much difference IMO. And charters are exempt from standard boat limits elsewhere where boat limits apply anyway.

For me I would like to see size limits increased, ie snapper should be a minimum of 30 cm as should flathead and whiting. As for boat and personal bag limits I am happy for people in the fisheries to set the limits based on science and knowledge gained on a year to year basis.

WB, a good thought provoking topic

I'd prefer a change to the following before we considered the boating issue;
- catch limits
- size limits
- consider closed seasons on estuary species
- consider the estuaries outside of Melb & the number if licences still working them

It would seem the boat issue could be solved with some better regulation on who's driving & their ability. Its easy to get a licence, but it should seem some ppl have no idea on the driving, rules, repercussions of their ignorance to speed and the boats at anchor.

He is talking about boat catch limits, not speed or operation of the vessel.

I'll fis the topic heading so it reflects on catch limits.

Brett, no worries, my misunderstanding.

All for boat catch limits, but no need to retreat it to just boats, should be same limits on the shore bashing as well.
