No brakes

Wondered why I had difficulty in stopping towing the boat, especially when it was wet. I found what looked like a disc brake pad that was really badly corroded on the road out side my place.

So far taken off the right hand wheel on the trailer, whilst there is plenty of pad, the metal part is badly corroded, so they are getting replaced, once I managed to get the bolts off the disc brake calliper. finding where I put the right size spanner is a nuisance, plus the nuts are imperial not metric.

The discs will always rust up (if this is the metal part you're talking about). If the brakes are adjusted correctly the pads will wear the rust down back to smooth metal again through the course of normal towing. They are a pain to keep properly adjusted though. obviously you're brake pads aren't helping if they're laying I the side of the road though!

There are limits to how rusty they can be but they will always rust up while not being used.

On my previous trailer the discs would get rusty scales looked horrible but just hit them with a hammer then just clean them up with the angle grinder and they would look like new. But you can not do it too many times or the disc thickness will reduce too much.

Its a common occurrence the pad coming disbonded from the metal backing and falling out. While you are down there check the cable they rust from the inside out they go stiff and snap
