Re: Anchor not holding
Also ensure you have out at least 3x the depth of total anchor rode to ensure it sets and hold properly. Sometimes less is fine but this is the rule of thumb.

Re: Anchor not holding
In my opinion upgrade the chain to 8m of 8mm short link chain. If the chain is doing the right job you shouldn't actually need the anchor upgraded.

Re: Anchor not holding
Hydroman,
I have the a boat of that size and use 7m of chain with a sand anchor. Increased it from about 4.5m and has never moved since.
If you're conscious of weight increase the chain first as you will most likely solve the problem with the extra chain. Can be a little more awkward to handle, but drifting at anchor is the ultimate in frustration.
In my opinion, chain length can be more important than anchor size/type. Within reason.
Good luck.

Re: Anchor not holding
I would try longer chain first.Hydroman wrote:Hi everyone,
many thanks for all of the replies. I just measured the chain and to my surprise, it is only 2.2m vs a 5.4m boat. I also measured the anchor and it works out to be a 2.7kg anchor which on the BLA website it says its suitable for 4m (BLA recommend 3.6kg for 5m and 4.5kg for 6m).
Sand/danforth anchors are awesome for mud and sand.

Re: Anchor not holding
Has anyone had any experience with Cooper Anchors? The one I use not works fine but is heavy as hell when I'm leaning over the front of the boat to pull it in. I was seriously thinking about these lightweight 1.5KG jobbies.

My boats a 4.5 m aluminium v hull Stacer. It's got a windscreen with a hatch that I don't fit through so front of boat anchor retrievals are done leaning over the screen.

Re: Anchor not holding
Hi everyone....many thanks for the advise. I will get a longer chain and let you know how it goes. I think I remember seeing BCF in Braeside selling chain cut to length so I will go there this week.
Cheers

Re: Anchor not holding
Just to give an update....I purchased 6m of chain and it seems to be holding really well now. Only been out in about 10 knots so have not given it a real test yet but looking at the GPS, I did not move. There was a very noticeable weight difference pulling up the anchor.
