Regardless of known/unknown use, replacing rope and chain soon after purchase seems like a good idea given your experience wolly. There's plenty of cheap **** chain around.
I've never known anyone with the springy mesh **** to have problems with corrosion. It just has a slight propensity to catch on hawse pipes on boats with winches
