I always put the expiry dates into my phones calendar and it reminds me when they are due

Like Cheater says if you get separated from your boat it could be an issue (quite rare but it happens).
I wear a PLB on me every time (I'm in a kayak). I have been offshore a few times with just the PLB but will have an EPIRB soon.
Only difference between the 2 is the battery life 24Hrs for PLB and 48Hrs for EPIRB, both put out 5 Watts, but I don't go nearly as far as boats (That's my story and I'm sticking to it ;-) ).
