heater option on the boat. will this work ?

Post by smile0784 » Fri Jul 29, 2016 3:37 pm

Hi
Just after some advice.
We are planning a trip upto bermagui and i opened my mouth to the partner and said its only going to be 10 to 14 degrees max out on the water and she wasnt too keen on that so i said i would see if i can get a heater on the boat to warm you up.

My idea so far is use a ark pack to hold the new marine battery and convert it to 24volts and then use a $25 fan heater from safeways or kmart.
I know it will probably chew alot of power from battery but only has to last 3 to4 hours each day for 5 days.
I can charge the battery in the ark box each night from a 24vt socket where we are staying.

Will this idea work or is there a better option?

Cheers ricki

One the presumption that you mean you are going to invert 12v dc to 240 ac there's not a hope with that,It's only got a 300 watt inverter.

Quick sums that may show how ridiculous this idea is in reality.

2400W heater at 240V = current draw of 10 amps
2400W heater fed from 12V = current draw of 200A

That 70AH battery will be dead within 20 mins even if it could deliver the required current. For what is essentially a super inefficient method of heating.

Cheap ways to overcome this in conjunction with good quality snowboarding type clothes that I may or may not suggest. Just doing the old whiteboard test here

Jetboil cookware and a hot water bottle. 5/10 idea
Multiple thermoses and hot water bottle. 3/10 idea
Reusable gel type hand warmers that you boil to reset 6/10 idea
Milwaukee jacket and multiple 12V batteries 8/10 idea
Leave missus at home. Don't listen to her complaining of being cold. 10/10 idea

Grab some thermals. I wear 3 layers of them in the kayak and am nice and warm despite sitting in an inch of 10C water. Anaconda had a sale on and were selling them at half price, I'm not sure if it's still going but it might be worth a look.

Or you could just tell the missus to harden the **** up
