im sure if just sitting in and around the harbour a smaller vessel will do the job, that way you can use the boat elsewhere.
offshore rigs will cost a lot more to maintain and run too
so take all of that into account.

When I go to Portland its in my mates 560c Barcrusher. (Now called the 610c)

You wouldn't want to be in much smaller. On perfect days I've seen 12 foot tinnys out there. but if you get in trouble you're a long way from home even close at places like the lighthouse. Let alone out at the shoe. I wouldn't be keen on anything less than a 17R I have a formula 15 and I wouldn't bother taking it down there given I have access to the Barcrusher. If I lived down there and had the pick of the day's my boat would do it though.

I would have to disagree.

It's not the size of boat that matters, its a combination of other factors such as: knowing how to read the weather forecasts, choosing an appropriate day to go out, safety measures taken, boating experience, craft reliability, etc.

That being said, I personally wouldn't go out offshore in anything smaller than a 14ft.

Off course it has its limitations, anything over 25 knots and I pull the pin

Just pick your weather
I have a similar boat and a similar plan mate... but never been there... can you please share a rule of thumb weather wise... the wife doesn't wife chop as she has a bad back. What is your limit (wind and swell)?

Cheers!
