Winches..cables..
Re: Winches..cables..
Hi Bowl, looks like the outside rollers on the easyguide are too long and catch the strakes on the hull, maybe you can trim them down a bit. I use a winch strap on my 4.5m tinny and have no problems at all.
Cheers Ango.

Re: Winches..cables..
I made the switch to dyneema rope last year and i will never go back to steel cable or a strap. The rope handles much easier, you dont have to worry about rust, corrision or twists and kinks.
I will admit that when i first used it i was worried that it would not live up to its breaking strain and snap, mostly because it just looks like a bit of thin rope. But after countless retrievals it still looks like new and i dont even think about it anymore.

Re: Winches..cables..
Damage / Fatigue of winch cable - I use wire cable but once boat is pulled tight against bow support on the trailer, I actually back of the tension on the cable so there is no load on it during transport/travelling - I then attach security chain from the bow on the boat to the bow support on the trailer - Then install 2 rear tie downs as well as one across middle of hull - 14' Tinny with plenty of gear in it, including outboard.

You also need to ensure that when the boat is up against the winch-post, that the top of the winch drum (full of cable) is at the same height as the winching-eye on the front of the boat. If its not you will be trying to lift the boat OR pull it downward as it nears the winch-post... and be very hard to wind in that last metre.

Thats what i have, except i got a whole new winch at the same time. Its great stuff, even four wheel drivers are using it on their recovery winches.
