Life Jacket Expiry

Post by Yota » Sun Feb 10, 2019 11:56 am

I've been given some boating gear, my dad health is beyond return and he's given up on his life on the water. He won't even come out in my boat any more he's just unable too. So he's selling his boat.
Amongst the gear is a water snake brand 150n manual inflatable life jacket brand new in the packet.
I opened it up and found the manufacturer date is 2013.
I also checked the compressed gas cylinder just out of curiosity and it has no rust or damage. It looks new. The rest of the Jacket checks out like brand new as well - following the self check list.

It comes with a self check (re-certify) card.

Can I re- certify it now given the 6 years since it's been made ?
Last thing I need now is a fine for an expired life Jacket.

Wish I was fishing today.

Cheers all

Or you know.... end up in the water and have it fail.

It's probably fine but that's not the kind of thing you want to be 'probably' fine.

I get your point Dougie, but whether old or new you won't know 100% whether it will work till you pull the cord.

Set it off, leave inflated for 48 hours. If it doesn't deflate itself over that period it's good to go. Generally the jacket is a1, the canister though has leaked some gas

If the canister isn't rusty then don't set it off. It's fine. You can weigh it if you want to see if it's the correct weight (should be printed on the canister). It's a totally sealed unit, no gas will escape. You self inflate the jacket using the mouthpiece and then leave it inflated for 24 or 48 hours or whatever the instructions say. If it's still inflated then it's fine to repackage it and use it. Write your inspection date on the tag on the lifejacket and keep your signed inspection list on the boat in case you get queried (never happened to me). One word of warning, do not leave your inflated jacket in the sun.i did this once and it simply burst. I reported it to the manufacturer who replaced it free of charge but still an inconvenience.

Thanks for the info everyone.
Skronkman, I'll give that a go. Cheers.
Via another forum I was given a contact list for Jarvis Walker - looks like they are the agents for water snake. I'll give them a call as well to make sure the 6 year span is ok.
