Sounder advice please

Post by Wombatroo » Sun Aug 04, 2019 4:23 pm

Hi I have a old Lowrance lcx112c. Works well. I bought a Humminbird 597ci for the gold card. Now this one has down scan. I am thinking of having that one installed as well. I have been told not to, and get a side scan sounder. Could anyone tell me am I going to see more fish on a side scan than down scan? Cheers Tarnia

If my memory recalls.and s9meone please.c9rrect me
Side scan give you wide beam and only good at slow speed but might not.always be accurate.

Down scan can do deaper water and a fast spead.

If you side scan is good for following fish like chasing a school.of salmon

I have the Lowrance Elite 7 Ti2 which has both sidescan and down imaging and i absolutely love it for the type of fishing i do which is in PPB in mostly less than 20m of water.

While you can use sidescan to see fish i find it way more useful for searching for structure that might hold fish. And i have to say that for this purpose it is a game changer. It is almost like sticking your head under the water and checking out what is down there. I tend to use the sidescan while searching an area and then switching to down imaging when i am anchored on a mark.

In short, i dont think you will mark more fish. But you will definitely get a better picture of the bottom structure, which can be just as good as actually marking fish.

Agree with whats been said above!
if your new to sidescan and downscan, then i suggest watching some youtube videos to understand whats involved. it doesnt magically just work, lots of people have trouble reading sidescan sonar.
so see if its for you prior to jumping the gun on a new unit.

once you work out how to read it though, its a very valuable tool to have onboard!!!

Some pretty sound advice here.

Wombatroo what will you be targeting/where I haven’t looked up the specs of your sounders but can safely say it depends on what your target species is and where you will be fishing to determine what will best work for you.
