Post by smile0784 » Sat May 13, 2017 5:15 pm

Decided to put a new switch pannel in the boat and had a look under the dash and its a mess.
Not going to be as easy as i thought.

Is this ment to be a same as a negative or earth board?

Yeh, I'd be changing that and replace it with an appropriate bus bar .

Looks like it but you'd want to test everything anyway. Most boats with average wiring jobs are like that.. My haines was exactly the same but much worse before i rewired it.

Looks to be a + post and - post with colour coding not being a concern when it was previously worked on. Would be ok if the supply conductors have ample capacity regardless the previously mentioned solutions are an improvement.

What rb85 said. Pretty common to see that. It's easier to identify when all the negs are black and all the pos are red though! Nothing wrong with doing it that way, often there is a pos bus on the switches and a negative post just like yours when there isn't too much to wire up.

Stick your multimeter on them to confirm you've got battery voltage and you know which is pos and neg.

Ya doing the right thing, looks messy because is messy and yes , this way is common, as common as dc fires in boats .
I always like to see wires tied together which branch off to their mounting point. Vibration etc in boats don't go hand in hand with wires/connections.
