Lowrance HOOK 4x

Post by kahlua_khan » Fri Nov 11, 2016 12:54 pm

Howdy, I have a smaller boat and am looking for a cost effective sounder to install in it. The smallest CHIRP sounder that I have seen is the Lowrance HOOK 4x, which I know has a small screen, but does anyone know if these small sounders are any good?
Thanks

YES THEY ARE GOOD, i used to have the same one in my old boat.
i would recomend you buy a bigger screen so you can actually see more.

the 3 and 4 series are mainly suited to yaks or situations where you have the sounder right near your face.

Yes in fact they do the same job that the Hook 5 and 7, I had the 4 but replaced it by 7 because the screen is far to small and hard to see sometime on moving boat, I think it is a perfect unit for a Kayak.

I had the 5 screen bit small when looking from a meter away. If you want to do split screens spend $200 more and get the 7 inch.
5 inch chirp was good no complaints when using single screens ans the map was great very detailed

Well thats my 2 bits

l was looking at the same fish finder for my boat which is a 3.75m makocraft.
So l would be sitting right next to it,would the screen still be too small in that situation?
Cheers Tony

They are quite a small unit mate. I would def recomend atkeast a 5 as a minimum.

The lowrance hook is the new model chirp so to speak.
IF you can get the older model (elite chirp models) they are the same and can be had cheaper. SO buy a bigger screen in the older model elite chirp units.

Thanks purple5ive,l have tried to find the older elite models but haven't been able to come across them here in Ballarat.
l think l will have a look at similar units in the same or other brands but with bigger screens.
This model hooked me[pardon the pun] because the normal price at bcf was $245 and now it's $179.
Thanks for your advice

I have a 5.2 mt caddy quintrex and the 5 inch is just big enough if your within 2 feet of it. Me and a make who boat are big blokes stand side but side in front of it and its ok when its just on sonar screen.
The 7 inch is good if your sitting 3mt away from it at the back of the boat
