charging 12 and 24 volt in boat
This is how im wiring my boat.
Anybody see any f..k ups in it.
I have two 12 volt batteries at the back off the boat.one for starting and one for assessories
The motor produces 80 amps so I dont want to wastse the ability to keep my batteries charged up
These will be set up with a blue sea vrs and battery switch...pretty simple.
At the front off the boat I will have two 12 volt batteries run as 24 volt.
This will be charged of a redac 12volt to 24 volt charger.it will be a 40 amp charger.it will run off the start battery only when the boat is running....so basically it will run independently.....only become active when the start battery is charged enough.
im tryin to keep it as simple as I can account im often miles from help or land.
Cheers bm

Re: charging 12 and 24 volt in boat
how are you going to charge the accesories battery?
using the battery switch to switch them over?
if so only downside is forgetting to switch back.
can you motor be pulled started (aka 2 stroke?) just incase
cheers

The accessories battery is charged via the vsr....the start battery first...the acc battery 2nd.purple5ive wrote:how are you going to charge the accesories battery?

How come you would dump the vsr?frozenpod wrote:If you want to keep it ultra reliable I would ditch the VRS.

so the vsr charges both accesory battery and the trolling motor batteries after charging the start battery first?barra mick wrote:The accessories battery is charged via the vsr....the start battery first...the acc battery 2nd.purple5ive wrote:how are you going to charge the accesories battery?

Whilst reliable they can fail, not much of an issue if they fail open circuit as most system have (or at least an optional extra) an emergency bypass but if they fail short circuit you can accidentally flatten both batteries and be left stranded.

lol..I knew this would get complicated.purple5ive wrote:so the vsr charges both accesory battery and the trolling motor batteries after charging the start battery first?barra mick wrote:The accessories battery is charged via the vsr....the start battery first...the acc battery 2nd.purple5ive wrote:how are you going to charge the accesories battery?

Yes the vsr will charge both the start and ass battery..just like a simple system most off us have now in our boats.
The 24 volt batteries are charged through a redarc 40 amp charger that runs off a wire from the start battery....this redarc charger only starts charging after the start battery gets to like 13.7 volts....so when the engine in running.
My concern was that I may limit the charging of my acc battery when it was charging the 24 volt batteries

Re: charging 12 and 24 volt in boat
To be honest I have never wired a VSR in a marine environment. On paper it would work perfectly.
Personally given what you have planned and how far from help you're going to be I'd give a decent marine elec a call and run your ideas past them. Hell even drop in with the boat and a slab of diet coke and get them to have a bit of a poke around.
