A quick session on the Yarra

Post by bilby » Mon Nov 06, 2017 7:57 pm

It was a windy, but pleasant afternoon, so I thought I'd try a quick urban session in the freshwater section of the Yarra. The bait of choice was corn, fishing light with my soft plastics rod, using 10lb braid. After 45mins or so I was getting ready to give it away when the line started peeling off! The fish powered out into the middle of the river and after some time, turned and did the usual carp move of heading in towards the river edge. I managed to hang on and landed the fish at my feet - a pretty chunky specimen of 68 cm and who knows how many kilos (but it was heavy). Not a mulloway, but fun nevertheless.

Four more this afternoon - this was the biggest (incredibly wide and fat!). I had a double hook up at the time, and needed to fight another one for 10 mins while this one was progressively spooling me on trusty old my bream rod.

This time of year the big breeding fish turn up in the lower Yarra and up the Merri Creek. There are some absolute beasts to be had.
