Caught the bug again after 5 years

Post by Pics81 » Sun Nov 27, 2016 8:49 pm

Good evening all

Well after a 5 year absence and I have caught the fishing bug again and I have my son to thank.

2 weeks before his 4th birthday he asked me to take him fishing. I was so proud of him that I raced out the next day and purchased a kids combo with tackle box.

On his birthday briefly between family engagements we headed down to Lilydale lake, he had a ball couldn't wipe the smile off his face. Unfortunately we didn't catch anything.
Our second trip was Friday night at seaford and mordialloc piers. With the wind and me constantly being worried that my son would be blown away, we ended up with our second dounut. The best thing is that he still loved every moment and wouldn't stop talking about all the seaweed we caught on the way home.

The next 2 days I am working in port Melbourne and am planning on scoping out a few spots after work. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what I should be targeting and locations?

Thank you from a proud father

Hi there!
:welcome: to the forum mate.
I have fished the Port Melbourne area a lot over the years and at this time of the year have done well with pinkies and flatties :P
Lagoon/Kerferd Rd and Princess are all worth a go.
Good luck

Used to catch plenty of gars from both lagoon and kerford but haven't tried for awhile mate.
A friend of mine did well with squid from kerford a few months ago.

Don't chase the big ones yet. Small fish should be enough for now to ensure your son gets the experience of catching something. Bring bread, soak it in water and hit the pato river. Bread as burley will get the mullets close. You will surely get mullets to keep your son interested in fishing. Use small hook and small chicken pieces as bait.

Thanks great idea chasing mullet. Originally I was thinking garfish, remembering how much fun I had catching them as a kid.

If Healesville or Emerald are not too far out of your way give the lakes there a crack - there are still stock trout from that last stocking to be caught.
Easy access and reasonable chance of a hook up.

Don Lake - it is on Don Road where the footy Ovals are. Gets stocked a few times a year, also some Redfin and eels lurking.
Also the lake up at Emerald - where Puffing Billy comes in - again stocked with Trout.
Worms and trout nuggets should get you and the young guy some results. Lures of various types have also been worth a flick.
The Yarra through Chirnside park through to Warrendyte is also worth a try - just watch for snakes this time of the year - you also may have to search for kid friendly sections of river bank.
