At present there are large schools of either tommy roughs or mahwong at sorrento and portsea piers.

But what do you regard as snapper bait?

You could try catching some whiting and keep the heads.

There are the usual haunts for squid, but they appear to be a bit thin on the ground for landbased anglers at present.

Maybe you see a bit of salmon as good snapper bait? There are plenty around and it is a matter of being on the right spot at the right tome.

Gunnamatta can be hot one day and a total waste of time the next.

Trevally get around abit at Blairgowie or Sorrento.

The fishing report at Compleat Angler Dandenong has reports where you can go and catch some mullet.

In addition I always wonder how using some scallops would go as snapper bait?

What in the heck is a mahwong?

Scallops would be almost impossible to keep on the hook, you could wrap them in bait mate or similar, might help them hold a little.

Crabs and small octopus are good bait, but hard to find fresh.
