Nobody told the salmon

Post by Wolly Bugger » Fri Jun 28, 2013 5:49 pm

After hitching the trailer on the tow ball, I headed off and picked the deckie up, then we headed off. Arrived at the boat ramp in perfect conditions, no wind, no cloud, no waves except for a slight ripple on the water. We launched the boat and headed off to where I had a ball with catching and releasing salmon.

We trolled and trolled and changed lures, up and down we went, in close and out far and not a single hit. Off in the distance we could see some birds diving so we wound in all the lines and headed off flat strap towards the birds, slowing down before we reached them and started trolling, still not a single hit.

Back towards the boat ramp we went, after travelling over some nice looking weedy areas, so out with the squid jigs. Each drift we made, we were able to pick up a couple of squid. We decided to continue to try for some squid, whilst waiting for the salmon to turn up.

In the end we caught 13 squid, including one about double the size of the others. The salmon did not show.

Targeting salmon for the fight but ended up catching squid for the plate.......quite a good outcome Wolly

Had planned to have an attempt at the gummies tonite, but then plans had to be changed.

The technique we use when fishing for squid, is to have one or two rods with squid jigs attached hanging over the side, the reason is sometimes a squid will follow a jig in and not take it, but will take the one just sitting there. Another is that once a squid is hooked, there may be one or more with it, and they will follow, the hooked squid.

By already having a squid jig in the water, it increases the chances of catching the followers.
