Salmon mayhem
Well took the tinnie and got it wet again, conditions were less that ideal with the wind blowing directly onto the boat ramp, at least the waves weren't that big. So I committed myself and launched the tinnie. The wind makes it difficult to handle by oneself and eventually I get it sorted with out danger of crashing into the pier or rocks.
Cut my teeth on trolling for trout up in the snowy, as I started dragging some metal lures behind the boat, only put two rods out, as the wind made it difficult to steer in a straight line. After about 30 mins had a few hits and one hook up, so I changed the lures and the change of lures did nothing, not one single hit.
Eventually I decided to change to soft plastics and drag them around. Bingo hook up after hook up, even a couple of double hook ups on the soft plastics. Kept 4 and from then on it was catch and release. Lost count of how many I released, but it was a wonderful sight seeing the rods buckled over with the salmon frantically trying to escape.
Stuff the stuff about have drags set up at about a 1/4 of the breaking strain of the line, I had the drags locked tight, so I was not giving them a chance to wrap the line around a mooring buoy.
Sure I lost some, but they were being released anyway. The salmon would absolutely inhale the soft plastic, the ones that had only the jig head showing out of their mouths.
Eventually the I decided it was time to leave and it was cursing an swearing trying to put the tinnie on the trailer with the wind blowing right onto the boat ramp. Eventually I finally got the tinnie onto the trailer and off I went to weigh one salmon in for the Peninsula Total tackle comp. They weren't anything to write home about in size, but what they lacked in size they sure made up for it in the ring.
