Are you retrieving too fast?

The other day when I was spinning at Olivers Hill, I was casting and winding at my usual rate, and felt bumps on the lure.

After a few casts, I slowed the retrieve rate down a little and that is when I started to get hook ups. So I wonder how often are we retrieving the lure at a rate that is a little too fast?

Ok on a serious note you could be right though. Perhaps it also depends on the size of the target species chasing down the lure???

Well at gunners on Thursday I was retrieving flat stick with a 6.2-1 retrieve on my reel and caught more salmon than the people around me so I don't know if thats the case, however that could depend on the size of the fish, how big were the ones you caught?

I've often found the faster the retrieve the better the catch rate

For freshwater probably best to slow it down a bit due to these cooler months

Hard bodies and slugs are worked differently wooly.
You never work a slug too slow...
But for a hb sometimes they like the slow wobble than the faster tight shimmy.

There are days where a slower retrieve has worked for me. Just depends on what they feel like on the day. There have been days also where they will only take the slug on the drop so it is worthwhile to experiment with different techniques.

As dougie said it all depends on the day and situation. For bream slow is usually the go but then I've had days where upping the speed has turned lookers into strikers.

Generally though an aggressively worked lure has the risk of spooking fish so my first few retrieves are always on the conservative side and I up the aggression if I'm getting no hits until I figure out what they want.
