Hello!!!

Post by MsShimano » Sat Feb 18, 2017 6:42 pm

:water: hello all. New to fishing Victoria.com but not new to fishing! Just got my boat a few months ago. (5.3m swiftcraft with 115hp merc salt water series) I usually fish of port Phillip but have started launching out of Hastings. Still learning the ropes. Got some quality gear and my game fish is whiting!!! I've caught every other speices possible (kingfish, marlin etc) but for the life of me I can't hook a whiting! Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks and tight lines everyone! See you out on the water!

Hey rb85! Yes the kingfish was NSW waters. Caught 7 that day but only kept 4 (all over 80cm) what an amazing day. I started fishing in quail bank and middle spit at WP. I have a Hamachi Zenku Nano 7ft PE 0.5-3.. with a Shimano Stradic Ci4 3000 HG FB Spin Reel.. Daiwa J-Braid Multi PE 2.5 (20lbs) but I have visited tackleworld cranbourne today and bought a Shimano whiting Assassain 710EST as it's got a lighter tip.. might team that up with a Daiwa crest or throw the stradic on..

Head to the French island side of middle spit. Anchor near the drop off. Use mussel, pippie or squid strips as bait on some kl1/0's

Drop them down and teabag the sinker a bit to see if you are on solid ground or weed. If solid play the waiting game for 10 mins or so. If nothing move along 50m.

If you did that for a day and didn't get a whiting you would be very unlucky.

Awesome stuff MsShimano don't think it will take you long to find them especially using Ducky's advice above. Personally I don't use braid for whiting but each to their own.

Thanks ducky.. guess I'm unlucky.. I've tried that. With berley... (seemed like I attracted garbage)
no berley.. moved the boat 20m etc..I used a paternoster rig with a 2/0 circle hook.
Weather permitting I'm going out next weekend. I also entered the westernport whiting challenge (haha) so we will see how I go.. I'll try this new combo.. I used mussels, pippies and cuttlefish last time.. I'll try some fresh squid next.
