I fish saltwater almost exclusively with my 902 catana, It's a touch stiff but that's good if you're hauling in big salmon. Can't go wrong with that, or if you can't get one a Sonic 902 or something like that.

The low to mid range Shimano reels are good too.

Thanks DougieK I thought that was the case going off others advice which made me unsure hence this thread. I also didn't want something to flimsy that would snap the tip with a hefty cast or a big fish.

I have the catana 902 shorespin combo, solstace 4000 reel, 15lb braid for my salmon set up. Was recommended by salmon guru CarlG. No complaints, was $99 from bcf on sale.
If you can stretch the budget to get the Starlo jungle 922 spin combo then go for it. I have two of starlos combos, and they are awesome. Really nice action on the rods, both 7 footers, one is a classicx 2-5kg with 2500 sedonna and the other is a jungle stix 4-6kg with a 3000 symetre reel.
Tight lines = Good Times!

Yep you are all one the money with a 9ft graphite rod with a 4000 sized reel, holding around 220-250m of 10-20lb braid.
I use the Ray and Annes 902 Shorespin for $90 and a Shimano Sedona 4000; with the high line retrieve of 6.2; and I have 10lb PowerPro braid.
But my combo gets used a fair bit around the place and even when I travel over to SA to chase the big 4-5kg jumbos. I would suggest that for a budget of $150 you would want the Catana and Solstace Combo for $99 from either BCF or Rays Outdoors. Add in the cost of line and it will be 150. If you can't find that combo then go for a Sienna 4000 or Cazna 4000 at around $50, with a Sonic System Shorespin 902 of around $100.
With my combo I can cast a fair way out and the high speed retrieve of the reel, the metal slugs and poppers get ripped back at good speed.

Bump!

Just wondering if the Shimano Catana Combo is still seen as the way to go, or if there is better out there?

Budget of around $100-$150 give or take

There a new Brand coming out Oceans Legacy, I've had a play with the prototype from memory there a 9'2" model 20-45 grams, that felt pretty sweet. But I reckon it will retail close to $400. should be hitting shops soon
